Little-known Englishman David Skinns, a 43-year-old Korn Ferry Tour graduate, shot one of the rounds of his life at the 2024 Canadian Open in Hamilton, Ontario on Thursday, with his first-round 62. He shot 1-over par on Friday to guarantee him a place in the tournament at the weekend. World number three Rory McIlory also made it through to the weekend, despite a 2-over par performance on Friday. The same cannot be said for 2023 Ryder Cup captain Zach Johnson, among the bigger names who missed the cut.

What are the cut rules at the 2024 Canadian Open?

As a “regular” PGA Tour event, the Canadian Open follows “regular” PGA Tour rules when it comes to the cut. That means that the top 70 ranked players – and ties – at the end of the second round compete in rounds three and four, with everyone else heading home.

As things stand, the cut line ended up at even par on Friday.

Joel Dahmen is in third place after Friday

Netflix favourite Joel Dahmen is also in good shape after a 8-under start to the tournament. Rory McIlory’s opening 4-under 66 means he will continue at the weekend although he was 2-over par on Friday, while five-time PGA Tour winner Sam Burns will be even more confident after finishing the first two rounds at 6-under par.

After following up an opening 4-over 74 with a 71 on Friday, world No. 12 Sahith Theegala (+5) will be going home early, while two-time major winner Johnson (+2) suffered the same fate.

World No 1 Scottie Scheffler, who on Wednesday saw all charges against him dropped after his arrest at the PGA Championship earlier this month, has opted out of this week’s event at the Hamilton Golf and Country Club.
